Five Tips for a Healthy Summer

By Michelle Crean, Empowerment July 14, 2021
With the kiddos out of school, there is a shift in our normal routines, so it’s the perfect time to focus on ways to incorporate healthy choices into our summer days! Here are five easy ways to stay healthy and energetic all summer long:

1. START WITH A HEALTHY BREAKFAST: Not having to be out of the house for school means having more time to prepare a healthy breakfast, which will set the tone for your entire day. Think eggs, whole grain toast, and fruit; oatmeal with fruit and nuts; or a dairy-based smoothie.

2. PLAN AHEAD: As moms, we know that our best-laid plans don’t always work out that way, so an “in and out” trip running errands can easily run longer than anticipated. It's a good idea to always have a few healthy snacks on hand to keep your energy level stable. Think whole grain/low sugar granola bars, nuts, trail mix, or fruit.

3. MOVE ALL DAY LONG: Never stay in one position for too long. Get up and stretch every so often. Walk or ride your bike to the store, even pushing a stroller or pulling a wagon burns calories. Try not to sit on a bench at the park -- stand up and climb the equipment!

4. DON’T BE A MOMNIVORE: I heard this word a while ago and think it’s hilarious because we’re all guilty of it: spooning that last bite of mac and cheese from our child’s bowl or eating the crust of their grilled cheese. Those little bites add up to extra calories!

5. ALLOW FOR REAL LIFE: Honestly, does anything taste better than a soft serve ice cream in the summer? We’re going to be faced with temptation and it’s alright to enjoy treats, just opt for a kid-sized serving and be aware of how many times per week you give in to temptation so you can adjust the remainder of your food choices accordingly.

Little choices add up to major changes, so try to focus on making smart food choices, incorporate movement every day, and you’ll have a healthy, amazing summer!
