Swimming Beyond The Summer Season

At the Wilfred R Cameron Wellness Center

October 22, 2019

As the air is getting cooler and the nights are getting longer, kids are back in school. As the kids are doing all of their fall sports, it’s important that parents continue their children’s swim lessons. Studies have shown that a discontinuation of swim lessons through the winter months typically result in a decline in a child’s confidence and independence in the water, as well as a drop in technique and stamina. This can happen within a period of several weeks or even less.

Use it or lose it
Repetition and reinforcing existing skills to advance and develop ability in the water is critical. This also helps to ensure that months of summer lessons don’t end up “going to waste” as swimmers lose their “feel for the water” both physically and psychologically. Such maintenance is particularly important for infant, toddler and pre-school aged children when long-term skill retention and muscle memory are starting to develop.

Avoid Accidents
It’s also important that children understand how to handle emergencies and stay confident in the water, so that accidents can be avoided and precaution is taken. Maintaining swimming lessons throughout winter helps to reinforce their swimming and safety skills so they are prepared if something goes wrong.

Improve Motor Skills
Swimming has been proven to assist in brain development and for school-aged children, is regarded as vital for the development of academic performance, as well as coordination, motor skills, balance and concentration according to “swim for your life” and “swim4 life”. Six months out of the water across the winter’s break can lead to problems such as fear of the water and a decline in performance.

Remain Active
During winter, kids can get restless not being able to run around and stay active because of the cold weather. Swimming is a great way to remain fit while being in an indoor environment, plus it’s a sure way to keep those energy levels maintained without having to worry about being in the cold and wet weather.

At the Wilfred R Cameron Wellness Center we have a newly remodeled indoor pool --- one of the few in the area!  Come visit us and see how much fun your children can have. We have regular drop-in classes available for you to try out! Our group swim lesson (session 2) starts November 4th - December 21st. Private swim lessons can be started at any time in single sessions or packages of five. For more information call Mary Skiffington at 724-250-5242 or visit us at wrcameronwellness.org.
