October Preview At Frank Sarris Library

Huntington Learning Center will be offering a series of SAT overview classes from 6:30 to 8pm (9/29, 10/1, 10/6 and 10/8). Registration is limited.
* The Literacy Council of Southwestern PA is offering English as a Second Language classes at the library every Tuesday at 10:30.
* Join us afterhours on Friday, October 3 from 6:30 'til 9:00 for a special library fundraiser sponsored by the Friends of the Library. For $40 a person, you can create a painting while enjoying wine and hors d'oeuvres. Materials are included in the cost and instruction will be provided by The Art Room. Reservations are required.
* Pick up a copy of Kimberly McCreight's Reconstructing Amelia and join the Fiction Book Club to discuss it on Thursday, October 2 at 4:00pm.
* Keep your sweet tooth happy - sign up now for the October 6 Candy Making class (6-8 pm). This is your chance to make molded chocolate candy and is open to 11th and 12th graders as well as adults. The $2 fee covers the cost of all materials.
* Do you need help with Computer Basics? Come to the library on Tuesdays in October from 3-4 and get assistance at no charge to you. Space is limited - advance registration is requested.
* Mark your calendar and be sure to come to the library on Wednesday, October 8 for a 6pm session with Gary Boatman, a certified financial planner. This month, he'll be talking about how to control health costs during your retirement years. Seating is limited, so call today to reserve your spot!
* The Friends of the Library will meet at 6pm on Thursday, October 9. New members are welcome!
* Coupon Club will meet Thursday, October 9 from 4-5pm. Come to find coupons you need and share the ones you don't. Expired coupons will be donated to the VA in Washington.
* If you've always wanted to learn leather-crafting, this is your chance! Adults as well as 11th and 12 grade students) are invited to sign up for this Saturday, October 11th program to learn how to tool a leather key chain. All materials are provided for the $2 per person fee.
* Sign up now or just drop in - either way, we'd love to have you join us as we do some Crop Scrapbooking on Monday, October 13 from 6-8pm. The $2 fee covers all materials and the session is open to 11th and 12th grade students as well as adults.
* Come visit our archives and genealogy room to get one-on-one help with your research! Join us for Open Archives this month on Thursday October 16 from 4-5pm.
* Destiny Disrupted (by Tamim Ansary) is the Non-fiction Book Club selection for October. Pick up a copy and discuss it with us at 3:00 on Saturday, October 18.
* It's October...is the holiday season on your mind? If you're an adult with a penchant for thinking ahead (11th and 12th grade students are welcome, too), come to the library on Monday, October 20 at 6 pm to create a holiday decoration. All materials are provided for the $2 fee.
* Stitchers - Bring your project to the library on Thursday, October 23 and socialize with other crafty-types as we knit, crochet, and cross stitch from 4-5pm.
* Open Mic Night is returning to the library, and it's open to all ages! This is your opportunity to share your music, poems, jokes, and so forth. There's no fee, so be sure to get here early on October 23 (6:30 pm) for a seat on the comfy couches.
* Have you always wanted to learn how to draw landscapes, stills, and people? If so - and you're an adult or "older" teen (11th or 12th grade), you're invited to sign up now for the eight week long Intro to Art program that begins October 27 at 6pm. A one time fee of $5 covers the cost of all necessary materials.
* Star Scouts is a free, seven week long program beginning October 27 at 4:30 that is open to students in 2nd through 5th grades. We will have our own planetarium and the participants will earn enough points to become Star Scouts. Don't delay - register today! 
* Wednesday, October 29 at 1:00 will be the first meeting of Wiggles and Giggles, an exploration of musical instruments for preschool aged children. The children will also play parachute games, chase bubbles, and many other things. It's too much fun to miss, so be sure to sign up your child now!
*If you are home schooled or cyber-schooled, please join us for a harvest party on October 31 at 1:00pm. We'll be playing games and making a craft, and refreshments will be served. Small treats are welcome to pass out to the other participants and older children are invited to come to help. There's no fee for this event.

* Tail Waggin' Tutors are back for the fall. Call now to register your child for one of the Saturday sessions (noon - 2pm).
* Parents - tell your teens they're welcome at the library's Gamers' Club every Thursday at 3:15...This is their chance to play our XBox, Wii, N64 or PS3 on the big screen in the teen lounge!
* Wanted: Thrifty shoppers! The library is selling Enjoy Coupon books again this year...you spend $30 to get hundreds of coupons (valid though 11/2015) and we receive a portion of the proceeds - it's win/win!
* Storytime has returned for fall! Call or check our website for the appropriate days and times for your child to attend.
* Tuesday evenings are a time for students in grades K-5 to play and discover something new at the library as Library Explorers! With a different topic each week at 5pm, you'll want to be sure to call or stop by to register.
* Family Nights are now on Tuesdays at 6:30. This program is a storytime for all ages, from toddler to adult, to explore differently themed stories, crafts, and games. Register by calling the library or stopping by the Children’s Desk.
